How Much Sun do Hibiscus Need?
How much sun do hibiscus need? Not as much as is commonly thought! Our own experiments have shown that even 2 hours per day of direct sunlight is enough to stimulate blooming. Less than that and you will grow pretty green bushes without blooms.

In hot summer weather, many cultivars of hibiscus prefer to have plenty of shade during the day along with 2-4 hours of exposure to the direct sun. If your plants seem to be struggling and look tired, but you think you are doing everything correctly, then it is likely that they are getting too much direct sun. Moving such plants to a more shaded location can result in a greatly improved look as well as more blooms.
In mid-summer heat, hibiscus will still produce lots of buds but often these buds will fall off before they open. Rats! The only thing that can be done is to make sure the plant is not under any stress from lack of water, and perhaps to move the plant to a cooler or shadier location. When the temperatures cool to under 90 degrees as summer wanes, the plants begin to bloom spectacularly once again. This is all part of the normal process, so do not let it concern you overly much.
